The hiring process for the Scottsboro Fire Department consists of four phases:
1. Written test. A 90 question test consisting of reading comprehension, interpreting tables, situational judgment, logical reasoning, reading gauges, applying basic math rules, mechanical aptitude, spatial sense, map reading, and vocabulary. There is no study guide available for this test. A passing score of 75% is required to advance to the next step.
2. Physical ability test. This test is the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) as required by the Alabama State Fire College. CPAT information is available here. An orientation for the test is conducted 8 weeks before the test. The candidate must attend the orientation to take the test. The time limit to complete the test is 10 minutes 20 seconds. The test consists of stair climb, hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search, rescue, and ceiling breach and pull. Successful completion of this test is required to advance to the next step.
3. Interview. Conducted by a board of five fire fighters who interview each prospective employee who passed the CPAT. The board recommends the top candidates who are to be part of the final interview.
4. Final Interview. The Chief conducts this interview. After all recommended candidates are interviewed the Chief makes the final decision.
