The Scottsboro Municipal Airport – Word Field has undergone many changes over the last 10 years. With the assistance of an active Airport Advisory Board, the City of Scottsboro, and grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, the airport has experienced the growth needed to serve the general aviation needs of individuals and businesses in the City of Scottsboro and Jackson County.
With a runway of over 5,200 feet and RNAV Instrument Approach Procedures, Scottsboro Airport can accommodate business and private jets. The runway lighting system consists of Pilot Control Lighting, Runway End Identifier (REIL) Lights and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) Lights. The airport also has an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), giving pilots the sky conditions, visibility, barometric pressure, wind conditions and density altitude of the airfield. This is available on frequency 120.125 or by telephone number 256-259-1148.
A modern terminal facility provides pilots, passengers, and visitors with accommodations to relax during layovers and refueling. The facility has Wi-Fi connection, a computer and map room, a pilot’s lounge, conference room, and break area with snacks and soft drinks available.
Additional features consist of modern fueling system with 100LL Aviation Gas and Jet-A Fuel, perimeter fencing for security and runway safety, and hangars for 30 aircraft. The airport ramp area has tie-down space for 16 aircraft.
